Have you ever had a dream so big that you have always known that one day, it’ll be the right time to just walk away from everything, take a big ol’ chance, and start chasing with all you’ve got? You know, make that big jump and REALLY start going for your dreams?

Sure, you have! (I’m sure we have this in common since you’re here with me today!)

It seems that there comes a time for this–when it really IS time to chuck it all, stop talking and start doing, and just jump in and go for it. But…when is that going to happen? When is it really the right time?

It’s a big question. And not always an obvious answer.

There’s a lot of push out there in the entrepreneurial world to go for it, do it now, get it done five minutes ago, good things come to those who act (not wait) and la la la…..all well-intentioned advice, and honestly, pretty darn true.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that any of it is easy.

For those of you who dream of your life being about a business that you love rather than a job (or situation) that sucks your soul dry, it can be plenty tricky. And scary. What if it flops? What am I gonna do without a “real” job? What are people gonna say? What if my friends and family just don’t understand and don’t support me? And again, what if it flops?

But seriously, everyone—there comes a time when it is time to just stop talking and start doing. Stop wishing and start planning. Stop bitching and start a revolution (am I dating myself with that one?) ๐Ÿ˜‰

Is NOW the time, though? Do I have a plan to get me there? Can I think of everything that might go wrong and prevent it from happening? But most of all (and we probably should’ve asked this first!)…..What exactly IS this big life-changing thing that I want to do, anyway?

I’m glad you asked! And no time like the present for me to put all of my ideas in that regard out there for you.

Folks, sometimes “that moment”ย  just happens. The breaking point. The “I’m Outta Here” moment. Where enough is enough. And you turn and walk away from ordinary life. And stop bitching. And start that revolution.

But what about the times when you’re just suffering? And clueless? And wondering why things aren’t changing? In other words, what if the problem itself is just flat-out nebulous? Then the solution will be just as so–if you’re not clear on what it is that you want to change, it can be awfully hard to come up with the HOW to change.

Ah, but if you ARE….well, we can work with that.. And we can give THAT 100%.ย  And start making things happen.

In other words, knowing the WHAT comes before the WHEN…and the HOW.

So here’s what I would say to you: regarding whatever your Big Jump might be, first answer this: what does this mean to you?

It can be a lot of different things, and everyone has a unique answer to it. Maybe for you it is quitting your job to pursue your dreams full-time. Maybe it is just getting clear on an idea and starting to take it seriously. Maybe it is closing up shop and planning to travel extensively while you create a location-free business. Maybe it is simply to really and truly understand what it means to be an entrepreneur rather than an employee (and believe me, THAT realization is life-changing!)

Whatever it means to you, just be clear about it. It doesn’t have to be an earth-shattering deal right at this moment. Then again, if earth-shattering is what you want, than it DOES need to be that! Figure it out. What would be the DREAM right now? Think of it this way: “I would feel so much better if could do___________________right now.

And by “so much better“, I mean this: relieved. Inspired. Motivated. Giddy with excitement that this actually might happen. We’re talking about what would be “the dream” to you in this moment. Don’t be shy. But do be honest. And don’t hold back. Don’t worry if your dream business venture isn’t like everyone else’s, and don’t worry if you’re dreaming “too big” or “too small”. If you want to leave your job in the next three months, GREAT! If you want to be published in the Huffington Post and be featured on your local Morning TV Talk show as the expert on basket-weaving, AWESOME! If you simply want to figure out what you want to freaking DO with all of this and start getting clear on your ideas, THAT WORKS TOO! As long as it completes the above sentence with heart and gusto, it’s right.

Now that you know what it means to you–and again, this is ALL about you and what you want your entrepreneurial dreams to be, so nothing is too big or too small–you have the dirt. It’s yours. You have the plot of land to start building the house. Congratulations, future homeowner!!

So the first step of the path to the leap is actually knowing what that leap really is–then making a plan to get there.

Now, THAT is the next question…..now that I know what I want, how do I get there? And is it the RIGHT time?

Again, glad you asked!

Next week we’ll talk about how to use this vision to actually take the action. Of course, if you’re inspired to jump on ahead and start making plans right now, do it, please! But we’ll be going into the actual planning of it all coming up soon–and we’ll also get to what happens when the inspirational high simmers down and (ugh!) “reality” sets in. (And don’t worry–we’ve got ways to charge through that and even make it our ally, too!)

So how about you? What is that “First Thing” that you gotta put first? What would be the dream answer for you right now? Tell me all about it!

Talk soon!

Wonderful post today! Thank you for “calling the question” on what we each might “do first” to bring our dream forward … I begin almost everything with a plan — not a seat-of-the-pants kind of gal ๐Ÿ˜‹…. Now, my “lesson plans” are nearly complete … 2 more to go before “show time” !! I am soooo lovin’ it! Again, love the message today! ๐ŸŒŸ

Yep, it is best to at least have an idea of what you want before you can actually start going after it (wasn’t that a Joe Jackson song a million years ago?). Even if it is just the first step. Especially if it is just a first step–that’s where the foundation is built! The next step is the plan and the action…

And BTW, that was a song….

Yes! I remember that song ! When it first came on the radio, I recall thinking, “Well , duh!!”…. Then, it became a little more reminiscent of Peter McWilliams remarks that many things are “simple, but not easy.” Thank you for the tune flashback and its real message. ๐ŸŽ†

Yep, all true–simple but not always easy! Love that!

So true, knowing the WHAT comes before the WHENโ€ฆand the HOW !
In my experience when I know WHAT, the WHEN and HOW show up automatically IF I pay attention and have my eyes and ears open. And I learned, that when the WHAT is truly a desire, the courage will be provided. For example, I felt like I don’t have the courage but on the other hand deep inside me I knew, I had to do it anyways. Isn’t there a saying, something like Courage comes from doing it anyways.

      Exactly! Well said, Conny!

I would feel so much better if I could get up early every day and have some time for personal reflection. I’m not a morning person, but I so want to be, and I’m convinced that getting up early is a domino that would spill into the rest of my day, fueling me for the whole day. When I do manage to get up earlier than everyone else in my house, it’s blissful, and I great the morning with intention and start my day with purity.

    Great question!

That is a great one, Maggie! (And I know the feeling, as I am not at all a morning person, either!) Great to figure out something that would really make a difference..at that point it makes it easier to start seeing how it could actually come together. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love the question “I would feel so much better if I could do _____ right now.” I’m going to start using that regularly to help me hone my goals and dreams. Thanks!

Thank you for the great post!

“Stop wishing and start planning” That is such a hard step to take. But once you take that leap and gain the momentum, you will never look back!

I really struggled with this for the longest time “if youโ€™re not clear on what it is that you want to change, it can be awfully hard to come up with the HOW to change”.

I lacked the clarity on what to do for so long (I think I was just avoiding what I knew I needed to do), which caused me to just go in circles trying to figure things out. Clarity is key.

Absolutely, Val! One of the hardest steps of all to take…and sometimes the clarity doesn’t come right away, either. Totally get the struggle, too….it is funny how clarity can come from taking action, but then again it is hard to take action without clarity…but I have also found, too, that staying with everything helps, even if it feels like nothing is changing, often things that you don’t even realize yet are happening, getting you to where you need to be. Thanks so much for the great comment!

What is the big thing I need to put first? Probably working on improving my health, actually. Not at all related to writing or my career etc. It’s not the answer I want to give. But it is the right one at this time in my life.

That does always come first, to be sure…hope that you’re taking good care and getting better!

Wow! The next big thing for me is probably separating out which of several “big things” should take precedence! I just launched my own business and as excited as I am about building e-courses, I have to respond to two different requests for proposals first! This is a good thing! Really looking forward to the next post about what about after the “inspirational high simmers down” … it’s easy to dream big, but the plodding, one foot in front of the other stuff is what separates the dreamers from the doers. Thanks for a great post!
