When you’ve had enough of the soul-sucking misery of the corporate job…when you KNOW there’s something MORE to you than that, but you don’t know just what yet..that’s when that all-elusive (and totally cliche) PASSION thing can elude you.
It’s usually then that the inevitable question comes next. That is, if you hate what you are doing so much (your job), then what the hell are you going to do instead? If you hate what you do, the next question usually is….
“What do you love to do?”
I know, it’s a logical question. Totally get it. I mean, what else are you gonna ask yourself, right?
The thing is, if you’re anything like me, when you hear someone ask you that (or ask yourself that), it might just set your teeth on edge.
Now, why would something so encouraging and so FUN to think about actually make me gnash at the bit and go into a growl-a-thon??
The scene used to go like this:
Me: “I don’t want to do this anymore. I hate this job. I don’t love doing this”
My well-meaning friends: “Well, what DO you love to do?”
Me: “If I knew THAT, I’d be doing it!” (silently and with gritted teeth, of course!)
Oh, if only I could’ve been a little bit more grateful for friends willing to listen to me complain!
Still, the question did hang around. What DO I love to do?
Well, I loved to do a lot of things. A LOT of things. Many a passion, that’s for sure!
Nothing jumped up, though, that I loved enough to do to the extent of making it my business (literally!).
Until I started doing something else….changing up the questions a little bit:
How about this….not so much what do I love to do, but…..who do I want to BE?
Now, THAT’s something different!
That opens up a whole new world. It takes things to a whole new place.
It makes it possible for you to see the person who you ARE…and from there comes everything else you need to know. (Like..your passion, for instance!) 😉 When you know the person that you want to be, that passion that you have can’t help but show up.
Maybe not immediately…BUT eventually.
When you know who you ARE, you know what you want. When you know what you want, it’s a lot easier to make a plan and go DO it.
And isn’t that what it’s all about?
