College….was it REALLY the best years of your life?

As a professional not too far back-in-the-day, I remember my colleagues longing and pining away for the college years. All that freedom, no responsibilities, no…well, WORK? Those were the days, right?

“Yeah, right.” I always thought. Let’s face it–NO, they weren’t.

College wasn’t nearly all it was cracked up to be, if you asked me. We had to study. A LOT. The coursework was really hard (miserably so in my field!) We paid THEM to be there.

Sure, lots of partying and goofing off, but a lot more crap, misery, and nonsensical hoops to jump through, too.

I didn’t love college. Liked it well enough, it had its moments, but I NEVER wanted to go back just for the sake of college. (Sorry, Asher Roth!)

Funnily enough, though, I DID go back. Like, three times.

I got a degree in Microbiology. And Pharmacy. And almost got a Master’s in Science Education. But it wasn’t because I wanted to put my life on hold or go back to drunken romps on the weekends (I could have done that without paying tuition!).

Remembering that made me realize what it was that I REALLY missed about college. It wasn’t the parties. It wasn’t the illusion of freedom and being a pseudo-adult with limited responsibilities.

It was the POSSIBILITIES.

There was ALWAYS something ahead to look forward to, to achieve, to grow into and to reach for.

That goes on the whole time you’re in school. Sure, someone else sets the standards, but there’s always something new to learn, do, and aspire to.

And then you graduate. And get kicked out to a job that you might have for 40+ years. Doing the same…old..crap…every day.

NO WONDER people think they want to go back!

That’s just it–it’s about inspiration. It’s about excitement and possibilities. It’s about feeling alive and relevant in the world.

I’ve found that jumping out of the corporate world and into this entrepreneurial one has provided more challenges and excitement than I ever could imagine…WAY more than college ever did.

That’s what the real beauty of this business gig is to me. Best of all, it’s ALL on your own terms, not some board of academic regents!

I believe that’s what people REALLY crave. Freedom. Inspiration. Purpose. You get a pseudo-version of that in the academic world, but tell me….would you rather nostalgically pine away for auld lang syne…..OR create something new, inspiring, and ALL your own in the NOW?

I know what I’d do!

What do you think? Do you miss college? Would you go back if you were granted the wish….or does it sound better to be here now and create the business and life that YOU love that is all your own?

That is spot on! It always was the “great, bright future” that was the allure of college! Perfectly stated! 😊🌟

Thank you! The cool thing about realizing that college wasn’t all that is that you see not only the flaws in the system, but also that what you have to create on your own is far more YOU than any academic program could ever be. Plain and simple.
