Up to this point I’ve been kind of hesitant to tell my story. The story of how this business was born, how I came to it all, and why I’m doing it. Why is that, exactly?

Because…..to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t sure if my story was what one might call particularly fascinating or riveting.

After all, there are SO many beautiful and amazing stories out there of how people came to start their businesses. Stories of true courage and enormous triumph over daunting odds. Stories of failure and redemption. Stories that are the stuff of movies…that just happen to be true and NOT made up!

Honestly, I wasn’t sure if mine was all that note-worthy among all the astonishing and delightful true tales out there.

But then again, we ALL have brilliant stories. Each and every one of us. Whether they seem particularly distinguished or noteworthy enough doesn’t matter. They all mean something. They all deserve to be shared.

And, ahem, incidentally, WHAT was that part again about NOT comparing yourself to others???  😏

(Don’t you just LOVE those “practice what you preach” moments?)

So to THAT end….here it is…the WHY behind what I do (and how I got there).

I’d spent MANY years doing a corporate job—a highly demanding and stressful one, to say the least (retail pharmacy). I knew from the jump that this wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life (actually, I knew from about the second year of professional school…). But you know how it can be sometimes. You have to have “direction” in life. You have to make a choice. You have to “grow up” and be something. So I did.

But it wasn’t who I really was. And what was worse, it was sucking my energy–AND my Soul–completely dry. (Of course it paid well….)

It went on for years. Every year it got a little bit harder. I tried other careers (like teaching high school). I considered numerous other options (like teaching English abroad or working for Disney or just about ANYTHING else that wasn’t retail pharmacy). I was getting pretty desperate at that point. But nothing was changing.

But I began to understand that what I really wanted was to call my own shots in life. And have my own business. There, now THAT was progress!

I tried numerous MLMs with no success. I tried building a business around something that I knew well (Personal Training). Ho-hum. All the while getting more frustrated, more exhausted, and less hopeful that I’d EVER escape the corporate grind (and all the while seeing my future in the colleagues who were 20 years ahead of me…)

But then the problem itself REALLY became clear, that that was this:

-I wanted a business for the sake of a business, but I didn’t have a clue what I wanted it to be about

-Nothing had come along yet that I loved enough to MAKE into a business

So I was unclear about not only the WHAT but also the WHY. Because it’s not enough just to want your own business. You have to KNOW what your business is about, who it is for, and WHY it means so much to you. Or it won’t be enough to make you actually want to put in the work.

In other words, You Won’t Want It Enough.

That’s when it happened—the moment where I saw that I loved THIS more than anything–helping people who wanted businesses figure out their WHAT and their WHY for the idea itself—the REAL foundation right there!

Because without that, all you do is struggle.

Without that, all you do is spin your wheels and wonder what you’re doing wrong.

And I didn’t want to see that happen to ANYBODY who sincerely wanted a business of their own. Not ever.

So THERE you have it! Seeking out the WHAT and getting clear on the WHY…that’s what I do. That’s what I want to do for you. There is nothing more important than THAT for anybody, not for me OR or you.

Now, why did I share this today? Simple. Because the “WHY” behind you do what you do is THE most important part of your business. And I bet that there’s a “WHY” that YOU want to tell everyone about too, right? What is that ONE biggest thing that drives you to want to create your own business? The thing that means more to you than ANYTHING else? It matters. Really, it does. And your story is how you tell everyone why you do what you do.

–Realized that you’d had enough of a situation and decided to make real change

–Figured out an amazing new way to look at an old problem–and find a new solution

–Had a moment when you finally knew who you were and what REALLY mattered to you

These are the kind of moments that lead to amazing stories. And frequently to amazing businesses.

    Yep, it’s never enough to want a business just for the sake of wanting a business. At best you won’t be happy with it for long and at worst it will flat-out fail. But if you have a big “why” behind it that benefits not only you but ALSO your clients, that makes ALL the difference!
