TRUE callings. I talk about it all the time. But is there just one? Suppose that there is one MAJOR overreaching thing that you’re here for….but a lot of smaller things that it comprises, several stepping stones on the road to the REAL reason you were born?

I went back and visited one of those such callings a couple of weeks ago.

I went back to my Alma Mater in Athens, GA to hear the marching band play at a late-summer night rehearsal. And what a moment it was. Why?

See, one of my proudest accomplishments was learning an instrument and making it into that band back in the day. Being a part of it was one of the most glorious achievements of this lifetime for me.

But while I observed the new kids on the field, I had a moment–one of those moments in life where EVERYTHING made sense. (You know, when it all…just…”clicks”?)

I’d been through many of these kind of beastly hot and grueling rehearsals before, but even so they were some of the greatest memories of my life. I met so many amazing friends and had irreplaceable memories made on nights like that many moons ago.

But do I long for those days? Do I wanna go back ever?

No. Not really. As much as I loved it, as much as it was one of my TRUEST callings, I don’t want to relive the past even though I love revisiting it. Why?

Because as I sat there, I remembered that it really wasn’t so much the thing itself I was chasing when I joined the band. It was the FEELING I desired.

Feeling inspired. Part of something bigger than just me. Part of a glorious tradition. Oh yes, and most of all…feeling completely ALIVE.

That’s it right there….it’s not about getting hung up on a specific thing. It’s not about making anything outside of yourself the goal. It’s about knowing the feeling you want to feel…and finding the things that’ll bring you that feeling. (Mad props to Danielle LaPorte, BTW!)

And you NEVER lose opportunities for that. You can always find new ones.
What does this have to do with business and life? Everything. It’s ALL about going after the feeling that makes you feel the most ALIVE. The most ALIGNED (for lack of a better word!).

The most like YOU.
So many of us think that these days of inspiration and starry-eyed excitement are behind us when we “grow up”. That true callings are only for the young (and inside a certain designated window of time). But these moments never leave us. There’s ALWAYS room to grow, expand, and allow more of this awesomeness into your life.
That’s one of the best parts about taking over the reins of your own life (as entrepreneurs do!). Always welcoming new callings and new ideas to come to you….and knowing that the REAL you is ever-evolving. And if you let it, it will lead you down the road you were intended to march down.
Even after the supposed “best years of your life” are over. Cause you know what? They never are.

What a fabulous message! I especially love your comment about “revisiting” as different from “reliving” … Brilliant !! 🌠

That’s the thing right there–you can revisit old times as much as you want to, but reliving them is something else. It’s getting stuck in a moment that is NOT the NOW…and it often winds up diminishing the purpose of the experience in the first place. (That is, it’s easy to cling to the experience for the sake of the experience rather than what it was supposed to help you learn!)

Weird, huh? Happens ALL the time!
